GMN is a family-owned company that has been in existence for 114 years. Despite being a century-old enterprise, it is not a publicly traded company. Currently, it is managed by the fourth generation of the family, which suggests that the company possesses core technologies and has a strong tradition of succession. Now, let's delve into the details of this prominent German company in the field of precision bearings.
Founded in 1908 in Nuremberg, Germany, by Georg Mülle, GMN derived its name from the initials of the founder's name and the city of Nuremberg. In 1923, the company began producing ball bearings, and five years later, in 1928, it started manufacturing high-precision deep groove and angular contact ball bearings. This means that GMN has accumulated over 90 years of experience in producing precision ball bearings.
What sets GMN apart is its consistent adherence to a company strategy centered around "precision." It constantly challenges the demanding application scenarios and speed requirements in the field of machine tool spindles and precision bearings. With precision bearings as its core, GMN has developed flywheel clutches and non-contact labyrinth metal and plastic seals. Even for bearing professionals, many of GMN's technological breakthroughs at the time are still awe-inspiring today. For example, in 1932, they began producing a patented "Tempo" grinding spindle. In 1953, they introduced the world's first water-cooled electric spindle with a speed of up to 30,000 rpm. In 1980, they successfully developed a high-speed milling 25 kW spindle with magnetic bearings, capable of reaching speeds of 30,000 rpm. In 1988, they successfully produced bearing retainers made of PEEK, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius and grease lubrication. In 2006, they introduced an internal grinding spindle with ceramic ball bearings, capable of reaching speeds of up to 250,000 rpm and a velocity factor of 4500 meters per second.
GMN's growth in scale and internationalization has been relatively slow. In 1995, the company had 200 employees, and by 2005, the number had grown to 370. Even today, GMN's workforce in Germany is just over 500 people. The company has also adopted a cautious approach to internationalization. Apart from establishing a GMN subsidiary in the United States in 1998, they opened GMN China in Shanghai in 2008, focusing on the sales of GMN spindles and spindle repair services as their main business.
